February 2013 Ipsy Bag: Fall in Love with Ipsy? Or Fall into a Black Quagmire of Eye Makeup? Yes, and yes.

Say hello to the February 2013 Ipsy bag! I hate to say it, but this is the first month that left me feeling underwhelmed when I first unzipped the bag. Maybe Ipsy spoiled me with all that fancy Urban Decay eyeliner and Josie Maran Argan Oil they sent in December and January. This month, my first reaction was Oh, look at the eye bag. Sure, go ahead and imagine a bag full of craft googly eyes.

(or just imagine the Edith with Googly Eyes tumblr)
I love eye makeup, but four of the five items in this bag are for eyes. And the mascara, eyeliner and eyeshadow are all black. I can haz color?! Please? If one of the items was full size, or if one of them was a brand that I love, or if the gel eyeliner came with an applicator, I would've been more excited. But when I did the math (and found my eyeliner brush), I decided the value isn't so bad. NUMBERS DON'T LIE:

PixiBeauty Flawless & Poreless Primer, 0.5 oz. (full size/1.01 oz. is $29.00): $14.36
Here's the problem: The Pixi primer contains shea butter, which usually breaks me out. Until I'm sure this doesn't break me out, I'm withholding judgment. This unscented primer looks pink when it comes out of the tube. It feels smooth and heavy, blends easily, and rubs down to a translucent finish. I like the way it feels, and it didn't make me more shiny than usual, but I prefer the sheer coverage of a BB or tinted moisturizer.

MicaBeauty Gel Eyeliner, label doesn't state size (full size/0.18 oz is $30.00): $6.67 (I estimated, this number might be a liar)
This stuff is awesome! I was afraid that a gel eyeliner would be difficult to apply, but it was easier to use than my usual liquid liner. I used a very small brush to get a super-thin, 100% solid line in one swipe. It comes in a very heavy glass pot that feels luxurious. And a little went a long way, so this sample should last a long time.

Coastal Scents eye shadow quad, 0.07 oz. (a full size .04 oz. shadow is $1.99): $3.48
This one was the dud. These shadows are tiny. I'm not crazy about getting two black eye shadows in one quad, and the palest shade is terribly unflattering. That cool, sickly gray is the height of zombie chic. But the medium gray is alright. I'll use that one.

Pop Beauty Smoky Lash Kapow mascara, 0.17 oz. (full size/0.25 oz is $18.50): $12.58
Mascara is always rad. This formula doesn't clump, and it makes my lashes look unnaturally long. WIN!

Lash Cards, four (full size/10 cards is $6.99): $2.80
These were my unexpected favorite! When I saw them, I laughed. Who holds a piece of cardboard behind their lashes when they apply mascara? Um, from now on, THIS GIRL. The Lash Card doesn't just keep you from getting mascara on your lids. Any mascara that isn't actually on your lashes sticks to the card, so you don't get clumps. When I used the Lash Cards on my lower lashes, they gave me perfect Twiggy eyes. SCORE! Throwing a card away after each application is very wasteful, so I'll get a real mascara guard when these run out. But hey, at least I found a useful new tool!

Total Value: $39.89
Ipsy Price: $10.00 + Free shipping

This month's bag wasn't the most exciting one I've ever received from Ipsy, but it was nice to try gel eyeliner for the first time. And those Lash Cards got me out of my beauty rut, which is exactly why I subscribed to Ipsy in the first place. I'm looking forward to next month's bag, and hoping it has more color. Pink cream blush or coral gloss, please?

  1. You are slowly but surely luring me into the land of Ipsy. I want all of these things...yet again. Gel eyeliner is my favorite. To me it is almost easier to apply shadow or gel liner with a brush than to use a pencil or crayon...but maybe I am a complete weirdo. Also, I have a small sample of primer that I use on days when I want my eyemakeup to stay impeccable...and as a lover of BB cream, I only use it on my eyes bc MY EYEMAKEUP LOVES TO TRAVEL ALL OVER MY FACE (all caps!)

    1. You're not weird... just more makeup savvy than me! I can't believe I hadn't tried gel eyeliner before. It gave me much more control than liquid liner, and a thinner line than pencil liner.

They really seem to like sending us primers, so you're likely to hit the primer jackpot when you subscribe. :D

  2. I really like the primer! It feels super silky and brightens my skin. The mascara, notsomuch - smudges.

    1. Yeah, I'm starting to think the problem that I *thought* was my eyeliner is actually that mascara. :(

  3. I just received my very first Ipsy bag and agree with you -- not overly exciting, but I think I'll stick with them for at least another month! I'll be doing my post sometime next week, too. Glad I stumbled upon your blog!

    1. Even when the Ipsy bags don't make you feel like you hit the jackpot, they're still fun. I'm glad you found me! I'm so curious; where are you going to school? I went to CSUN. :)
